24/7 Light and Medium Duty New York Towing Service

When calling us for tow truck service, you'll need to have some basic information available. Our dispatcher will need to know about your situation and the type of vehicle that needs to be towed. There is a difference between light duty and medium duty towing. The size, weight and condition of the vehicle will determine what type of tow truck and equipment will be required in order for us to complete the job safely and effectively. Throughout this page, we will explain the difference between different tow truck styles, as well as provide helpful tips for you to keep yourself safe when waiting for a tow truck.

Difference Between Light Duty and Medium Duty Towing

Light duty towing is used for smaller vehicles such as small cars and trucks which are up to 3/4 ton. Generally anything that weighs 9,999 pounds and under is considered to be light duty.

Medium duty is anything that is between 9,999 pounds up to 26,000 pounds such as larger cars and trucks which are up to two and a half tons.

Each job is assessed by our towing company staff and there are different combinations such as light to medium duty or medium to heavy duty. These ratings are important in deciding which type of tow truck and equipment will be best suited for dispatch to the job.

Methods of Light Duty and Medium Duty Towing

The methods that are used for light or medium duty towing depend on the situation that the vehicle is in:
  • Cars and light trucks which have sustained minor damage are generally recovered by using a flatbed tow truck equipped with a winching system if they are in a ditch or other area with access issues. The bed of a flatbed tow truck is equipped with hydraulics that lower the bed at an incline to ground level so that the vehicle can either be driven or pulled up onto the bed. It is then leveled and the car is secured for safe transport.
  • Another type of light to medium towing method is the use of a Wheel lift tow truck. A yoke is placed under the drive wheels and it is lifted to prevent damage to the drivetrain and transmission during towing. This type of towing is only used if the non drive wheels are in fit condition for wheel lift towing.
  • Vehicles that sustain major damage may need to be loaded onto a flatbed tow truck for the most secure towing to ensure that loose automotive parts do not fall onto the roadway when in transit.

Situations that May Require Light Duty Towing

Most light duty towing calls involve light or smaller cars and trucks. These types of service calls may involve road assistance for flat tire repair. If a flat tire has caused more extensive damage to the vehicle, the vehicle may need to be towed. This is commonly done with a Wheel lift truck, depending on which wheels are flat. For situations involving cars that get stuck in snow or mud, go off of the road and need to be pulled out of a ditch, or the removal of smaller junk cars, light duty towing may also be appropriate.

Keeping Yourself Out of Harm's Way Until A Tow Truck Arrives

If your vehicle has become disabled for any reason, the best advice is to call for professional roadside assistance. Be prepared to provide detailed information that includes:
  1. The nature of the problem that you're having.
  2. A description of your vehicle.
  3. The location you're in and to the best of your knowledge
  4. The type of towing service that you need.
This gives the dispatcher useful information for sending the most appropriate type of help your way. Being exact about location can also help them to find your vehicle more quickly. If you don't know the exact location, provide any landmarks that you may have passed or which may be in view.
If it's possible to move the car without doing further damage, pull off of the roadway onto a safe area that is clear of traffic and free from hazards. Remain in the car with your emergency hazard lights on and lock all of the car doors. Keep the windows rolled up. If you are approached by strangers with offers of help, let them know that help is on the way and only crack the window low enough so they can hear you talk. This is an important step in protecting yourself from would be criminals.
If your car stops in an unsafe place and cannot safely be moved, try to find a safer place to wait for help to arrive. You should only leave the vehicle if staying inside would present a greater risk to your personal safety.
